Advertisements in today’s industry uses gorgeous women. Slim and perfect, they appear flawless. It is supposedly the result of the product being advertised. The effect on teenagers everywhere is less than good.

Most campaigns show females getting positive attention from males while looking perfect. This image has girls believing the best way to get a guy’s attention is to be flawless. Even though it sells the product to the impressionable teen, it lowers their self-esteem in the process.

Commercials like this are known to lead to extreme depression in impressionable teens. Some companies have foregone this type of publicity, a lot of other companies have not. The biggest problem with this kind of campaign is the people hired to perform in them.

The best example of this type of advertisement is the skin care products. They give the job to models or actors. These people are made up to look perfect. It is hard to believe that the product really works if the skin is already made to be flawless. Yet, teens are impressionable enough to buy into it because their favorite celebrity says it works. This is a very wrong idea to send out.

Teenagers who see these advertisements on TV think they have to look perfect in order to be satisfied in life. This is not a good signal to send out. When teens see commercials like that, they think they have to look like what they see in order to be happy. That is not a good way of thinking.

Television is not the only guilty party. Magazine advertisements are even worse. The models featured in ads for make up and other beauty products don’t look realistic. They are airbrushed and perfect. There is no such thing as perfect beauty. In today’s society, there is far too much pressure put on teens to look perfect.

Companies are taking a stance against low self-esteem. Perfection is not used in any of their product media. The act of using real customers to advertise their products is becoming more common place. This is the best form of advertising. Though celebrity endorsement is still popular it’s not the only form being used now. It is good for teenagers to see individuals just like them using the products they might use.

The next time you’re flipping through your favorite fashion magazine, sneak a look at the cosmetics advertisements. If you have magazines from earlier than 1990, take a look at how the industry has changed. You will be greatly surprised.
