Lighten Up On The Denim
When it comes to outdated or even obsolete fashion, I can appreciate the wackiness of it all. I love the crop tops, high socks, bright neon colors reminiscent of the 80s culture workout culture. I love the ripped up leather jackets or even sports jackets with shoulder pads that were also prominent in the 80s and early 90s. But next to wearing a wardrobe full of Pacsun apparel, I just don’t understand the appeal of denim on denim. Should people be allowed to wear this stuff?
I’m specifically talking about with button down denim jackets (among other denim faux pas’). It is the quintessential 1990s American television wardrobe default. Think about it. All those sitcoms like “Full House” or “Growing Pains” featured their characters rocking too much denim. Even George Costanza of our beloved “Seinfeld” is seen in a few episodes wearing a less than flattering combination of a denim jacket over a solid-colored sweater tucked into his oversize Wrangler’s.
I’d say the deadly denim combo was close to making a comeback around the emergence of Hip-hop mogul pet projects of Sean Combs and Jay-Z: Sean John and Rocawear. What they did was took tight-fitting denim and simply loosened it up…a lot. Baggy jeans with baggy denim jackets were a big hit in the early years of the new millennium. It has since dropped out of style, but funk master Sly Stone was recently seen sporting the outfit at this year’s Coachella music festival. He even added a denim baseball hat! Should have stuck to the bell-bottoms, Sly.
I’ll clear this up, I’m not trying to scrap denim. I have a decent collection and a Wrangler jean jacket I wear on occasion. I will never, however, put those two together. Those days are over.
People, you know better! I know you can do better! Denim works well with lots of other clothes. Let’s not match it with more of the same!
