The frigate birds are a family of seabirds and are also called frigate pelicans. It can be found breeding along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica and in the Corcovado National Park.

They are also sometimes called Man of War birds or Pirate birds. Females are black, but have a white breast and lower neck sides, a brown band on the wings and a blue eye ring. They have long wings, tails and bills and the males have a red gular pouch that is inflated during the breeding season to attract a mate.

Due to the fact that these guys lack the ability to take off from water, they snatch prey from the ocean surface or beach using their long, hooked bills. They have been seen catching fish, baby turtles and similar items in this way. When it comes to feeding they will also rob other seabirds, using their speed and maneuverability to outrun and harass their victims. The Magnificent Frigate Bird is 100 cm long with a 215 cm wingspan. They live an estimated of 30 years. Frigate birds are seasonally monogamous. This means that males will only mate with one female each season. They are also known for nesting in colonies.

Both parents take turns feeding for the first three months but then only the mother feeds the young for another eight months. It takes so long to rear a chick that frigate birds cannot breed every year. It is typical to see juveniles as big as their parents waiting to be fed. Male Magnificent Frigate birds inflate their throat sacs during breeding season, clattering their bills, waving their heads back and forth, quivering their wings, and calling to females. After mating has passed females lay one or two white eggs.

Some potential problems they have are: introduced predators and over-fishing. Populations appear to be declining, due mainly to human destruction of habitat for housing and resorts, and disturbance in colonies. But they are not endangered.

White lipped Peccaries are the big and aggressive brothers of the collared peccary. They have even killed jaguars when trying to defend themselves. That is why white lipped peccaries are considered as the most dangerous peccary. They live in Central and South America. This species typically prefers dense, humid tropical forest, usually with primary growth, although their habitat also includes dry savannas and tropical dry forests.

The pelage of the white-lipped peccary is an overall dark reddish-brown or black. A curious thing is that each and every hair has two different tones: light at the base, and then dark. The average length of these animals is reported to be: body length, somewhere between 90 and 140 cm, shoulder height 40-60 cm, and body weight 25-40 kg. The maximum a white lipped peccary has lived is 13 years. It is an omnivorous animal because it feeds on fruits, roots, tubers, palm nuts, grasses and some invertebrates.

It is also a social animal. It is known that they live in large herds of 50 to 300+ individuals, though there have been reported sightings of up to 2,000 individuals. Studies have shown that a herd can cover about 10 km per day. With such a large number of herd members, it is necessary for white lipped peccaries to constantly move in order to obtain enough food. The white-lipped peccary is a diurnal mammal.

156 to 162 days is the gestation period of white lipped peccaries. When it comes to babies the great majority of births are twins. There are weird cases of single or triples births. The white lipped peccary doesn’t have a specific breeding season. They breed throughout the year.

The kinkajou’s woolly fur consists of an outer coat of gold or brownish-gray overlapping a gray undercoat. Studies have shown that 90% of their diet consists primarily of ripe fruit. They may play an important role in seed dispersal. Leaves and flowers make up much of the other 10% of their diet. Also they sometimes eat insects, particularly ants.

They normally live 23 – 24 years, but in a Hawaiian zoo they had a kinkajou that lived for 40 years. These nocturnal animals also have a short-haired, fully prehensile tail like some New World monkeys, which it uses as a “fifth hand” in climbing. Scent glands near the mouth, on the throat, and on the belly allow kinkajous to mark their territory and their travel routes. Kinkajous sleep in family units and groom one another. While they are usually solitary when foraging, they occasionally forage in small groups.

White tailed deer are very popular in Central America. In Costa Rica they are commonly seen in the rainforest of Guanacaste. White-tailed deer can adapt to a wide variety of habitats. They also live in much of the Central American territory.

The deer’s coat is a reddish-brown in the summer and turns to a grey-brown throughout the winter. They eat large varieties of food, commonly legumes and other plants, including shoots, leaves, cactus, and grasses. The white-tailed deer is a ruminant, which means it has a four-chambered stomach like cows.

Males weight up to 400 pounds and females weigh up to 200 pounds. They rarely live more than 10 years but there have been cases of 20 year deer. These guys are 0.9 to 1 m tall at shoulder. A great indication of age is the length of the snout and the color of the coat. Older deer tend to have longer snouts and grayer coats.

They normally form groups of 2 to six individuals, but there have been groups of up to 15. When the breeding season comes males will try to copulate with as many females as possible. If there are numerous males in a particular area, they will compete for the females. This will cause them to lose physical condition since they rarely eat or rest during the rut. Females give birth to 1-3 spotted young, known as fawns generally in May or June. Fawns lose their spots during the first summer and will weigh from 44 to 77 pounds by the first winter.

Because humans and deer often share habitats, there can be problems for both of them. When a deer’s habitat becomes smaller often eat food from gardens. They also need to cross roads to look for food or water and some are struck by cars.

Camping in the outdoors is fun and and a great way for friends and family to get together. Most people prefer to camp outside in fairweather. The prospect of bad weather makes them put off their trip. Rain is part of nature and brings with it several incredible experiences. However, rain can ruin your camping trip when you are not well prepared. Here are few tips on how to keep dry while camping.

Your tent is an integral part of your camping gear. Choosing the right tent will help you in staying dry while camping. When you go shopping for a tent, always choose a waterproof one, not a water resistant one. Water-resistant tents are not designed for use in heavy rains. Even if your tent is waterproof, make it a point to set it up over a ground cloth or tarp. This helps create a barrier between the floor and the ground so that moisture cannot enter. Once you set up the new tent, make sure that you seal the seams using a seam sealer. You can buy one from any shop that sells sporting goods. Another point to remember while pitching a tent is to use all the stakes that it comes with. These stakes play an important role in maintaining the structural stability of the tent in wet and windy weather. Most tents come with a rain fly. This is an extra piece of waterproof tarp that is attached to your tent. It acts as a roof over your tent. Always attach the rain fly when you set up tent since you never know when it may rain. If your tent does not have a rain fly, you can make one using some tarp. Simply stake the tarp over your tent such that it does not touch your tent. You need to raise the middle portion of the tarp with a stick so that rainwater runs down the slope onto the ground.

Where you pitch your tent is very important to keeping things dry. High and level ground is always preferred, so that the tent can be set up properly and with enough space to walk around it. Always make sure that there is no evidence of previous run off coming through the site you have chosen. Never set up your tent at the bottom of a slope or in a low point. Water always collects downhill and in low points.

You will also need to take along plenty of rain gear and clothes that are easy to dry. You will need a good rain suit and some ponchos. Cotton and denim is the fabric of choice for most campers but such clothing should be avoided while camping in rains since they soak in moisture and take a long time to dry. Go in for polyester or micro-fleece or other such materials. If your clothes do get wet when you go out in the rain, create a separate area to dry them out. If it stops raining, you can hang the clothes on a branch and let the wind dry them up. Also remember to bring along rain proof shoes or boots and plenty of socks.

While camping in monsoon, ensure that your sleeping arrangements suit the weather conditions. Get sleeping bags made from synthetic materials instead of down. The ground may get wet in spite of the precautionary measures you take so it would be a good idea to elevate your sleeping bags using cots or airbeds.
